Unpack crime, stigma, and Calabrian identity at home and in the diaspora.About this EventResearch into the ‘ndrangheta, a criminal organisation from Calabria, has constantly shown that both institutional and media narratives against the mafia can generate and consolidate bias and stigma against Calabrians both at home and in the diaspora. But what does this organisation actually do and how? And what can and can’t they do both in Calabria and abroad? How do we address that stigma? In this talk we explore identity, stigma, deviance, and crime on the backdrop of the preservation of Calabrian culture.Presented by Professor Anna Sergi and Vincent Morfuni KC.Professor Anna Sergi is a criminologist and professor at the University of Bologna, with honorary roles in Melbourne and Essex, specialising in mafia‑type organised crime, the ’ndrangheta, and its global and diasporic dimensions, including Australia.Vincent Morfuni KC is a founding member and Board member of the Australian Calabrese Cultural Association, committed to preserving Calabrian culture, challenging stigma, and promoting Calabrese identity and heritage in Australia.
