- **Event Name**: Monsters in the Math: Black Holes at the End of Physics
- **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 03 Jul, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Fri, 03 Jul, 2026 at 08:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join astrophysicist Matt O’Dowd for a fascinating exploration into one of the universe’s greatest mysteries: black holes.About this EventDrawing on his expertise in astrophysics and his work as host of PBS Space Time, Matt will unpack the science behind these extraordinary cosmic objects -from how they form and warp space and time, to what they can reveal about the origins and future of our universe. Blending cutting-edge research with engaging storytelling, this talk offers a unique opportunity to delve into the strange and captivating world of black holes.Black holes seem too strange to be real—places where time freezes, space flows faster than light, and our best theories of nature break down. But we now know they must exist because we find their traces everywhere—from ripples in spacetime caused by black hole collisions to brilliant quasars powered by giant black holes near the cosmic horizon.Yet these extraordinary objects remain at the edge of our understanding, filled with paradoxes that bring our deepest theories into conflict. For exactly this reason, black holes may offer our best clues to an even deeper theory of nature, and perhaps even a path toward a Theory of Everything. The 2026 July Lectures in Physics is a thought-provoking free lecture series where world-leading physicists bring engaging talks to the Melbourne public every Friday in July since 1968. This year marks 100 years since the first flight of a liquid-fuelled rocket by Robert Goddard, 40 years since the launch of the first Mars rover (Soujourner) and is the year we witnessed humans returning to the moon with the inspirational Artemis II mission. Our eminent speakers will be asking the big questions: Should humans colonise Mars, and how would we? What can Australian-made satellites tell us about our Universe? What role do local scientists play in space exploration? How has the discovery of gravitational waves changed astronomy? Join our line-up of eminent speakers to find out.Refreshments will be served after each lecture in the foyer of Sidney Myer Asia Centre. We are grateful for the support of the Laby Foundation for enabling this talk, which forms part of the wider programme of the Oxford XIII Cultural Astronomy School and the .Agenda?: 06:00 PM - 07:00 PMPublic Lecture?: 07:00 PM - 08:00 PMReception in the foyer of Sidney Myer Asia Centre.
