Since 1997, the Marian Barrett Lecture has become an annual event and a highlight of our Nursing calendar at The University of Melbourne.30 years ago the School of Postgraduate Nursing was created at Melbourne University with a vision to maximise the potential of nurses in the healthcare system. This lecture will reflect on that vision and the challenges that continue to face the profession at a time when nurses are needed more than ever. Do we keep doing more of the same or does nursing need to make fundamental shifts to maximise their contribution to health outcomes for Australians?
