I am pleased to share my experience as a blind artist, in conjunction with my exhibition currently at the McMillan Arts Centre.  Appreciating the notion, that the visual arts and blindness, for many viewers and indeed artists, does not compute, my goal is to respond to the inherent confusion.  During our time together I will speak of the definition of legal blindness, some important and relevant details of the workings of the human eye, and how each might influence art creating.  Whereas, my own art making experience, might be described as organic, consider the classically trained sighted artist, who loses their sight after several years of creating with full sight.  Here I am reminded of the British artist Sargy Mann, who after all odds, continued his successful art career after losing his sight completely, later in life.  In short, creativity is the name of the game, and he is not alone.  I am pleased to share my experience regarding several blind artists, who are as diverse in their creating as imaginable.  Finally, I am pleased to engage in a bit of blind technology, show and tell.  Several blind community members will be on hand to demonstrate their skill using Meta Ray-Ban glasses to describe art, and so much more.  The McMillan Art Centre has recently received a donation of a set of Ray-Ban glasses, so let’s see how they work!  I have been known to bring my I Phone to the gallery to ask Be My AI to describe some of the art.  I can demonstrate this technology as well.
