Réputé pour ses paroles denses et allusives et ses compositions formellement inventives, le groupe occupe une place unique dans le paysage de la pop expérimentale. Loin de mépriser la sentimentalité, cette réunion est toutefois moins une reprise nostalgique qu'une continuation de leur interrogation sur la forme musicale, la culture musicale, la narration et la mémoire. Formé à New York en 2000, le groupe a signé chez Rough Trade Records et a sorti huit albums acclamés par la critique entre 2003 et 2009, tout en effectuant de nombreuses tournées en Amérique du Nord, en Europe et en Australie. Parmi leurs concerts les plus marquants, citons le Radio City Music Hall (2004), All Tomorrow's Parties (2004, 2006, 2010), Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival (2005), Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (2008), Primavera Sound Barcelona (2010), Pitchfork Music Festival Chicago (2021), Le Guess Who? (2025). L'année dernière, le groupe a réédité son album phare Blueberry Boat en édition limitée deluxe gatefold 2LP avec le titre bonus « Far Away ». Cette année marque le 20e anniversaire de leur album Bitter Tea et le groupe le célèbre avec une toute première édition cassette.
