Safety Guidelines:
*Everyone must watch the safety video prior to the event:
*We will go over the safety brochure together before we start the clean-up on the day of the event. Print a copy to read while we are going over it together:

*Groups must have a minimum of 3 people.
*Volunteers must have good vision & hearing.
*Volunteers must be at least 12 years old.
*Volunteers 12-17 years old must be supervised at all times by an adult at a ratio of 1 adult to every 3 minors (aged 12-17).
*All volunteers must wear an MDOT safety vest.
*Wear light colored or high visibility clothing that does not obstruct your vision.
*Have a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen available to protect yourself from the sun.
*20% Picaridin insect repellant & insect head nets are recommended.
*Wear good footwear, such as leather boots or high topped shoes with good ankle support. Bring gloves to protect your hands.
*Be prepared for injuries, have a first aid kit available and a cell phone.
*Know route to the nearest hospital in Newberry. (502 W Harrie St, Newberry, MI 49868)
*Park vehicles on the side of the road you are working on, and well off the shoulder. Only work on one side of the road at a time. Try to enter and exit vehicles from the opposite side of traffic. Do not park on curves or areas that would obstruct motorists views.
*Work only during daylight hours and in good weather. Stop working in bad weather, especially when there is poor visibility and wet/icy roads.
*Work in small groups for better visibility and to avoid distracting motorists.
*Always face on-coming traffic when working and always be on the lookout for traffic dangers. Look up often to ensure traffic is not encroaching your work area.
*Do not work in construction zones.
*ONLY WORK ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT A TIME.
*NEVER CROSS THE ROADWAY FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER.
*Keep your eyes and ears open. Headphones are prohibited.
*Watch your footing. Stay off loose stones and steep slopes.
*Don't pick up trash on the road or the shoulder (stay at least 5 feet away from pavement edge).
*Don't touch syringes, dead animals, or hazardous materials. (Report location of hazardous materials to MDOT.)
*Know what meth lab waste looks like and do not touch. Report location to MDOT or the Michigan State Police. For more info see the Meth Bulletin:

*Don't compact trash in the bags.
*Place bags on the grass near the shoulder, but not on the road or shoulder.
*Drink plenty of fluids, especially in warm weather months. Take breaks and avoid overexertion.
*During cold weather, dress warmly with layered clothing.
