The Patriot Burial Marker recognizing the service of Nathaniel Mather will be unveiled on Saturday, July 26 at 10 a.m. at the Tillotson Cemetery just south of the corner of County Route 33 (Panama-Bear Lake Road) and County Route 12 near Niobe, New York.
The Chautauqua County Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will be conducting the ceremony along with officials of the cemetery and the town.
All are welcome to attend. Please follow the detour signs on County Route 33 as it is temporarily closed due to bridge replacement.
According to an entry in Patriot Soldiers of 1775-1783 compiled by Frederick Ward Kates and published by the Jamestown Chapter National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution in 1981:
Nathaniel Mather was born at Lyme, Connecticut, May 30, 1759 and died January 30, 1852, aged 92 years 8 months. This information is inscribed on the original headstone marking his grave. Two of his brothers were also in War of 1775-1783 soldiers: Joseph (1756-1848), buried in Hamlet Cemetery, town of Villenova, Chautauqua County, NY; and Stephen (1758-1837), buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, a few yards east of the county line in the town of Conewango, Cattaraugus County, NY.
At the time of his enlistment in the Connecticut militia Nathaniel Mather was living at Lyme, Connecticut. During his military service he acted as an aide to his uncle, an officer. Detailed information regarding his wartime career is not to be found in official state records beyond the fact that he was a pensioner in 1832 living in New London County, Connecticut. His name is on the 1840 Pension List as being 81 years of age and residing in the town of Harmony, Chautauqua County, NY with Nathaniel Mather, a son.
In an application for the Sons of the American Revolution completed by Charles Lewis Mather, Nathaniel enlisted on September 9, 1776 for three months and served under Captain Dan Marvin and Able Hall Walcott Cann. He re-enlisted January 9, 1777 for two months under Capt. Leerjay Dyer Throop Conn. Enlisted again in September 1777 under Abner Lord, Marshfield Parsons, Conn.
