Ngā Toi Harakeke and our kairaranga/artists would like to invite you to join us for the opening of our exhibition.
Where: Square Edge, 47 The Square, Palmerston North.
When: Tuesday December 02nd 6pm.
What to expect: we welcome you into the gallery to join us for karakia & a short mihi whakatau. Followed by light refreshments and a chance to meet the kairaranga who created the beautiful mahi.
The vision of this exhibition:
This exhibition celebrates Toi Māori not just as art to be viewed, but as a living expression of identity — of whakapapa, tikanga, māramatanga and wairua.
Each piece here embodies a story, a connection, and a voice.
Some speak of tūpuna.
Some of whenua and some of struggle.
But all speak to us as Māori — and to all wāhine who come with open hearts, open minds and are ready to connect to their Māoritanga through Toi Māori.
Each wāhine has created a maro (male apron, most commonly seen during kapa haka performances or pōwhiri worn by the tāne around the waist).
These pieces have all been made using harakeke (flax) & muka fibre which is the inner fibre extracted from inside the harakeke leaf. They have all been taught using traditional methods, materials & tikanga during noho wānanga held over 3 months (1 weekend per month).
We would love you to join us to celebrate the artists, their mahi, their journey, their story.
