The United Protestant Church in Palmer: Faith, Community, and the ‘Everybody Else’ Block

Join longtime Palmer resident Joe Lawton, a lifelong member of the United Protestant Church (UPC), aka The Church of 1000 Trees, as he takes us on a compelling journey through the spiritual and social history of one of the town’s foundational institutions.
Joe, who has attended UPC for 78 years, brings a deeply personal and richly informed perspective to this talk. He’ll explore the unique circumstances that led to the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation (ARRC)’s decision to allocate the Matanuska Colony's church blocks based on denominational lines—Catholics, Lutherans, and the catch-all "Everybody Else." Why was such a division made, and what does it say about the colony's vision for community life?

Joe has been an active member of the United Protestant Church since early childhood. He and his wife Ginny make their home in North Palmer, where they remain deeply involved in the life of the community. His talk promises to be both informative and heartfelt - a living link to the pioneering spirit that helped define community in Palmer.
