The Atlas is the first statewide survey of breeding birds *ever* in California, and you can help contribute! The Big Weekend is a chance to celebrate birds together and introduce new birders to the Atlas.Our FBCLA event is organized by members who are active with the Atlas. We are eager to share what we’ve learned with others — as well as hopefully see some baby birds! We’ll be doing a 3-mile, low-intensity hike along the Silver Moccasin Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains (see below for meeting spot directions). This habitat is ideal for mountain specialties like Mountain Chickadee, Pygmy Nuthatch, Steller’s Jay, Purple Finch, and White-headed Woodpecker. Along the way, we’ll look for signs of breeding and share how our observations can be recorded for the Atlas, contributing to knowledge and bird conservation efforts.You do not need prior experience with the California Bird Atlas or eBird to attend this event! We welcome fellow bird-lovers of all ages and experience levels (we love beginners!) and we center people of marginalized genders, sexualities, races, and abilities.Please bring binoculars if you have them. We also have extra binoculars and are happy to lend them out on a first-come, first-served basis!Space is limited, so please be sure to RSVP. ???MEETING SPOT INSTRUCTIONS:Meet at 7am on Sunday, June 7th at La Cañada Flintridge Shopping Center, in front of the HomeGoods (935 Foothill Blvd, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011). Look for the FBCLA sign!After making introductions, we’ll group up for carpooling as much as possible and drive up to the trail, about a 45 min drive north. Carpooling will be based on your comfort, and no one is expected to ride with others unless they want to.Attendees can also attempt to meet us up at the trail, but please consider there is very limited cell coverage in the mountains. It could be quite difficult for others to find the group, as we won’t be able to communicate about our location or exact arrival time. If you choose to meet us at the trail, we will be starting on the Silver Moccasin Trail near the Chilao Visitor Center at these map coordinates: (34.3311382, -118.0119120). We will be heading north on the trail from those coordinates to the Horse Flats and Bandido campgrounds, then will turn around.ACCESSIBILITY:The section of trail we’ll be birding is just over 3 miles round-trip, with an elevation change of 682 ft. The hike is meant to be low-intensity, but please be mindful of your level of hiking experience; this will be a dirt trail with minimal maintenance. The elevation is also as high as 5,600 feet, which makes physical activity like hiking more of a challenge than at low elevations.We strongly recommend hiking boots, sun protection (sunscreen, hat, etc.), and bringing ample water along with snacks or a pack lunch. There will be several opportunities to stop at restrooms, both near the trail start and at the turnaround point (which is a campground).
