Alexander Mackenzie and his sister Anne were heading homefor Christmas when their car broke down in a snowstorm just outside the littlevillage of Lower Ashford. They trudged through the snow until they came to TheCedars, an imposing Victorian villa owned by Joshua Riley, a Solicitor who livedthere with his wife Isabel. Also staying there for Christmas was family friendDetective Inspector Charles Appleby. Joshua Riley agreed that Alexander and hissister should stay there overnight until the storm cleared and their car could berecovered.As they sat comfortably by a log fire, lit only by the twinkling candles on theChristmas Tree, conversation turned, not unexpectedly, to crime and to anunexplained death that had occurred in the village on the 20 th December just twoyears before. A body had been found in the snow, dressed in a Father Christmascostume. They decided to go to a local Inn for a meal and the talk soon returned tothat death.As the details of that unsolved crime were revealed, the convivial atmosphere gaveway to tension, and it became clear that those present were harbouring secrets whichmight have some bearing on the death.
