King, Jr. Day Observance and CelebrationThe keynote speaker will be Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson, a prominent historian and professor, who has made significant contributions to the study of freedom struggles and social movements, with a focus on Black Studies and Chicana/Chicano cultural expression. She is currently a professor at UC Santa Barbara.For the MLK Day celebration, the morning will begin with a Freedom March from Plaza Park at Fifth and “C.” Streets. Community members, elected officials and spiritual leaders will assemble at the park for prayer at 8 a.m.; the march will begin at 8:15 a.m. and proceed to the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. Transportation is available to Plaza Park from the Performing Arts Center parking lot for the march only (provided by City Corps).The program will begin at 9 a.m. and will feature youth speakers, scripture readings, and gospel musical selections by the MLK Celebration Choir, which will be directed by Mrs. Tamara Thomas.
