- **Event Name**: St Catz MCR Colloquia - Monumental Physics with Luigi Marchese
- **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 19 May, 2017 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: On 4 July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider announced they had each observed a new particle. This particle is consistent with the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model, colloquially called the “God Particle”. In 2013 the Nobel prize in physics was awarded jointly to François Englert and Peter Higgs.

Half a century after it was first proposed, and after a monumental effort by generations of physicists around the world, the discovery of the Higgs represents a major breakthrough in our fundamental understanding of nature.

The Higgs boson is responsible for giving mass to all the fundamental constituents of ordinary matter. Without the Higgs boson, we would have never existed.

On 14 September 2015 a new milestone in physics and astronomy was achieved. The LIGO experiment made the first direct observation of gravitational waves, ripples in space and time first predicted by Albert Einstein 100 years ago. The signal was generated by the collision of the two black holes.

We’ll travel through space-time trying to understand the importance of these two fundamental discoveries in modern physics. Fasten your seat belt!

About the speaker: Luigi Marchese (Physics 2015) is reading for a DPhil in Physics at St Catz, though currently completing his research at CERN, Switzerland. Working on the ATLAS project, his research focus is on understanding the properties of the 'God Particle', the Higgs Particle.
