The research examined a gap in the AI governance landscape: the underutilised role of investors. The research was based on six roundtables with 62 institutional investors alongside 60 interviews. It found investors have a clear mandate to consider AI governance within their fiduciary duty, and in doing so can support progress on AI governance by analysing and asking companies questions on material risks and asking companies to adopt best practices in AI governance. The challenge is investors lack the relevant expertise. Consequently, there is an opportunity for the AI governance community to amplify its impact by providing this support to investors. Prior to this he worked for 20 years in investment and sustainability research with roles including co-head of the ESG research at BNP Paribas and Head of Governance Research at HSBC. He was previously a member of the UK Financial Reporting Council’s Investor Advisory Group and the ICAEW’s Technical Strategy Board.
