The notion that cognitive disabilities like autism and dyslexia convey positive aspects, as well as challenges, is often thought of as a new idea. But in the course of writing his award-winning book NeuroTribes, Steve Silberman discovered that appreciation of the virtues of "neurodiversity" was an old idea that had been forgotten because of decisions made by the child psychiatrist who took credit for discovering autism in 1943, Leo Kanner. Silberman will explore this hidden history of autism, including a tribute to the work of neurologist and author Oliver Sacks, whose writing helped resurface this valuable perspective in the late 20th Century.
