About the event

Rebel Book Club Perth x LEADING
Join us for RBC's December event as we explore the theme of Leading, through Jacinda Ardern's "A Different Kind of Power".

About this Event

Welcome to the RBC Perth event, where we'll be diving into December's theme, LEADING - stories of brave modern leadership, through this month's read, Jacinda Ardern's .

More about A Different Kind of Power

Jacinda Ardern grew up the daughter of a police officer in small-town New Zealand, but as the 40th Prime Minister of her country, she became a global icon for her empathetic leadership that put people first. She guided her country through unprecedented challenges, from the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks to a global pandemic. She advanced visionary policies to address climate change and child poverty. And all while juggling first-time motherhood in the public eye. This is the inspiring story of how a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt changed our assumptions of what a leader can be.

Why we chose it: “Wonderful. As clear-eyed and luminous a depiction of childhood and family life as it is a brilliant insight into the making of a politician, a mother and a head of state." - Bill Bailey

Your host for the evening

Albert Kurniadi

Known for his nomadic lifestyle and inspiring ventures, Albert founded Unseen Tours, a social enterprise in London. One of Rebel Book Club's original members, Albert is bringing all he's learned from over 100 rebel nonfiction reads (so far!) to Australia.

Most impactful RBC moment: "Meeting Emmy Award winning investigative journalist Ramitha Navai in person to discuss her book City of Lies, and delving deep into Tehran's underworld and the impact of morality laws and censorship in contemporary Iran. Ramitha was one of RBC's very first authors to come to the club's monthly events and she set a very high bar for how engaging and impactful an author's presence can be for the book club."

Albert's top non-fiction recommendations:

  1. Into The Wild, by Jon Krakauer
  2. The Art of Gathering, by Priya Parker
  3. Why We Sleep, by Matthew Walker
