Illusions aren’t accidents - they are structured appearances. Drawing on images from queer history, interior design, tarot and film, this experimental talk makes a case against comfort and straightness in its broadest sense - toward aliveness, embodiment and risk (specifically: tszuj). It asks how meaningful, rather than meaningless colour, might bring the future we dreamed of in 1999 into the here and now, through our bodies. From IKEA catalogues to gallery installs, from millennium optimism to the temporary and extractive logic of UK culture today, this talk proposes a way of seeing and being beyond the critique, and looks directly into the imitation and the impersonation of aliveness."Dudley Dream Walsh is a world-famous underclass artist and an unqualified outsider academic and graduate from the School of the Damned in 2017. Newly based in London and raised in Derbyshire, where previously he co- founded The Field, a semi-mythical DIY horizontal residency that continues to haunt his hometown’s imagination. Working across writing, drawing and painting, Dudley’s practice grows from abolition and anarchism, due to irreconcilability that leads to life outside institutional logics and support. As well as the psychic architectures produced by carceral power in schools, forms and gender, ie the CPS GIC proof and Englishness in general. More recently he has focused on image creation in its broadest sense, trying to understand where they come from and what they can mean.
