- **Event Name**: Dr Clara Barker - Why Diversity is Important in STEM
- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 13 Feb, 2018 at 06:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join us for LMH equalities week with a talk given by Dr Clara Barker.

Dr Clara Barker works in the Department of Materials, managing the Centre for Applied Superconductivity. Clara also happens to be transgender. During her youth there were few LGBT+ role models around, continuing through her STEM career, meaning that she transitioned late in life and at great fear that her scientific career would be over. Luckily this proved untrue, and that unfounded fear led Clara to become a loud advocate for LGBT+ diversity in STEM. Her work was most recently recognised by the Prime Minster being awarded the prestigious Point of Light Award.

In this talk we discuss “Why diversity is important in STEM: Learning lessons from history"
STEM subjects need, by their very nature, a wide range of diverse creative individuals to thrive. We need people who can analyse, critique and rigorously investigate theories. Equally we need those who can think outside of the box, think of new ideas and not be afraid to be wrong. However, the importance for a diverse scientific community has often been overlooked and those who appear different are held to different standard, stifling creativity and driving away people who may otherwise provide some of our greatest breakthroughs.

Through the talk we take a look at figures who, despite oppression, still achieved greatness. We also use Out in Oxford to show how, specifically LGBT+, diversity has permeated history, science and everyday life whilst often remaining hidden in plain sight. Out in Oxford is a collection of artefacts from museums and collections around Oxford that could be seen to have LGBT+ backgrounds, and bring these stories out for the first time.
By considering our history, we can ensure we do not repeat our mistakes in help STEM subjects, and society, to thrive.

The talk will be finished with a short Q and A by the Principle Alan Rusbridger and drinks for students.
