The event brings together Spanish world jazz musician Javier Sánchez Pérez (Cuejero) and Finnish electroacoustic duo hakosalo_tuohino, centering on the kantele – Finland’s national instrument – transformed through extended techniques and real-time digital processing. Jazz improvisation on double bass intertwines with Finnish folk textures and immersive electroacoustic soundscapes.

Audience members are invited into an environment of contemplative listening, where sound becomes a shared space for presence, exploration, and expanded awareness.

At its core, CONNECTION is a meeting point between tradition and innovation. The artists’ collaboration originated within the Horizon Europe project dialoguing@rts, which explores intercultural artistic exchange through digital co-creation. After weeks of remote experimentation and exchange, this marks their first in-person performance together.

Artists

- Javier Sánchez Pérez (Cuejero) is a Spanish musician and researcher working at the intersection of flamenco, Nordic jazz, and intercultural musical dialogue. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, the Sibelius Academy, and the Royal Academy of Music, he is currently a PhD researcher at the University of Helsinki, focusing on transcultural pedagogies and collaborative learning in music education.

- hakosalo_tuohino (Osmo Hakosalo & Jussi Tuohino) is an Oulu-based electroacoustic duo using the kantele as their sole sound source. Through extended techniques and live digital processing, they create evolving, immersive sound worlds rooted in improvisation. Their work has been featured internationally, including Gothenburg Fringe Festival, Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium, Jauna Muzika Festival, and Tallinn Music Week. Their debut album Live at Muhos was released in 2025.

The concert takes place at Oulu Music Center, where virtual collaboration is transformed into a live, spatial sound experience. The event is the result of the d@rts (dialoguing@rts) process, a Horizon Europe project exploring artistic dialogue, intercultural collaboration, and new forms of co-creation through digital and hybrid practices.

Within d@rts, artists and researchers develop shared creative work across distance, exchanging ideas, materials, and experiments in an evolving digital environment. This performance brings those processes into their first live presentation in Oulu.

The event takes place in Oulu as part of the Oulu2026 – European Capital of Culture 2026 cultural programme and cultural climate change.
