Please find the event details below.Resilient Landscapes in a Time of FireJillian Harvey, Thompson Rivers UniversityOver the past millennium, wildfire has been a defining force in shaping many of Canada’s ecosystems, with fire activity fluctuating alongside climatic and cultural change. In the past century, and especially over the last decade, western Canada has faced increasingly severe fire seasons driven by rising temperatures, drying trends, and the legacy of fire suppression. These extreme events have produced profound ecological impacts, from shifts in vegetation composition to altered wildlife habitat. Dr. Harvey will share new insights from ongoing research projects on historical legacies of lightning- and human-ignited fires, how burn severity influences forest recovery and habitat dynamics, and how forestry and management practices can converge to build landscapes resilient to future fire.Dr. Jill Harvey is the Tier II Canada Research Chair in Fire Ecology and an Assistant Professor in Thompson Rivers University’s Department of Natural Resource Science in Kamloops, British Columbia. She received her BSc, MSc, and PhD in Geography at the University of Victoria, and was an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral scholar at the University of Greifswald, Germany. Prior to joining Thompson Rivers University, Dr. Harvey was a Research Scientist with Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada, in Edmonton, Alberta. Dr. Harvey’s primary research interests include fire impacts on forest and natural ecosystems and forest management in context of wildfire resilience.
