- **Event Description**: Join Algonquin poet Albert Dumont on the picturesque grounds at Billings Estate for an intimate poetry workshop. Through readings and storytelling, the former Ottawa Poet Laureate will share insights into the inspirations for his works and his approach to composition. Participants will have the opportunity to craft a poem of their own with thoughtful guidance from Dumont. Light refreshments will be served.

This workshop will be hosted outdoors (weather permitting). Admission to the museum is included and participants are encouraged to visit “Beyond the Brim: Tales Told Through the Hats We Wore”. Elder Albert Dumont’s hat is featured in this special exhibition, which showcases headwear alongside stories about the individuals who wore them, sharing their impact on Ottawa’s history and diverse cultural landscape. Dumont’s hat is a special piece that he wears when reciting his poetry at locations to which he has a strong emotional connection. It features porcupine quillwork and beading skillfully built for him by Algonquin women, highly respected by the Kitigan Zibi community.

- This workshop is delivered in English.
- Advance registration is required. Workshops with insufficient registration may be cancelled. If an alternative cannot be offered, a refund will be issued.

- The workshop will take place outdoors under an open-sided tent. Please dress appropriately for the weather. In the event of inclement weather, the workshop may move indoors to a heritage space on the ground floor of the museum.
- “Beyond the Brim” is located on the second floor and is only accessible by stairs. A visual aid is available for those unable to visit the special exhibition. The primary exhibition can be explored on the first floor.

Cet atelier sera animé en plein air (si la météo s’y prête). L’entrée au musée est comprise et les participants sont invités à visiter l’exposition Plus qu’un chapeau : Les histoires des chapeaux que nous portons. Le chapeau de l’aîné Albert Dumont figure dans cette exposition spéciale, qui présente une collection de couvre-chefs assortis d’anecdotes sur les personnes les ayant portés et qui met en lumière leur influence sur l’histoire et le paysage culturel diversifié d’Ottawa. Le chapeau de M. Dumont est une pièce unique qu’il porte pour réciter ses poèmes dans des lieux auxquels il est profondément attaché. Il est orné de piquants de porc-épic et de perles habilement assemblés pour lui par des femmes algonquines, très respectées par la communauté de Kitigan Zibi.

- L’inscription préalable est obligatoire. Faute d’un nombre suffisant d’inscriptions, l’atelier pourrait être annulé. Si aucune activité de substitution n’est offerte, les droits d’inscription vous seront remboursés.

- L’atelier se déroulera à l’extérieur, sous une tente ouverte. Pensez à vous vêtir de manière appropriée selon la température. En cas de mauvais temps, l’événement aura lieu dans un espace patrimonial au rez-de-chaussée du musée.
- L’exposition Plus qu’un chapeau est présentée au deuxième étage du musée et n’est accessible que par un escalier. Un support visuel sera proposé aux personnes qui ne peuvent pas s’y rendre. L’exposition principale peut être visitée au rez-de-chaussée.
