The most comprehensive survey of Jim Logan’s work to date, Requiems brings together major works spanning more than four decades of engaged artistic practice. Landmark series such as The Classical Aboriginal Series, Reconciliation and A Requiem for Our Children are featured, alongside a new body of work, Ten Little Indian Bars, which maps bars across the country that have served as gathering spaces for Indigenous patrons, including Ottawa’s oldest tavern, the Château Lafayette.

Jim Logan’s work is driven by storytelling. Drawing on the recursive logic of mise en abyme—images within images, stories within stories—his paintings reframe canonical European artworks, biblical narratives and art historical conventions through Indigenous perspectives. Renaissance compositions are reimagined on Turtle Island; familiar scenes shift, destabilizing inherited frames of reference and revealing the exclusions embedded within them.

Combining bold figuration, saturated colour and incisive wit, Logan’s work often holds humour and grief in tension. His paintings confront the enduring impacts of residential schools, the complexities of reconciliation and the resilience of Indigenous communities, while also challenging the authority of Western art history. Through acts of inversion, citation and narrative layering, Logan inserts Indigenous presence into the centre of these histories rather than at their margins.

First developed in 1990, A Requiem for Our Children remains among the earliest visual bodies of work to address the experiences of residential school survivors, long before such histories were widely acknowledged in public discourse. These works function not as allegory, but as acts of witnessing—gathering testimony, memory and lived experience into powerful visual memorials.

Throughout his career, Logan has described himself, with characteristic irony, as “a social statement artist.” His works unfold as layered narratives shaped by oral storytelling traditions, where meaning accumulates through repetition, variation and subversion. Biblical imagery, art history and contemporary Indigenous life coexist within a single pictorial space, forming a visual language that is at once critical, humorous and deeply human.

Born in 1955 in New Westminster, British Columbia, and of Métis ancestry, Logan has played a significant role not only as an artist but also as an advocate and cultural worker, contributing to the recognition of contemporary Indigenous art nationally and internationally. This exhibition offers a renewed opportunity to engage with the depth, complexity and lasting impact of his practice. He currently lives and works in Ottawa.

Admission is free. Many works are also presented outdoors in the SAW courtyard, where they can be viewed at all hours.

This exhibition contains imagery and themes that may be distressing to some viewers. Requiems includes depictions and references to sexual violence, as well as sensitive subject matter related to racism, residential schools and police brutality. Visitors are encouraged to move through the exhibition at their own pace and to prioritize their well-being. Staff are available to provide support or help visitors access a quiet space at any time.

La plus vaste rétrospective de l’œuvre de Jim Logan à ce jour, Requiems rassemble des œuvres phares couvrant plus de quatre décennies de pratique artistique engagée. Des séries marquantes telles que The Classical Aboriginal Series, Reconciliation et A Requiem for Our Children y sont présentées, ainsi qu’un nouvel ensemble d’œuvres, Ten Little Indian Bars, qui recense des bars à travers le pays qui ont servi de lieux de rencontre pour des clientèles autochtones, dont la plus ancienne taverne d’Ottawa, le Château Lafayette.

Le travail de Jim Logan est animé par le récit. Par des gestes d’inversion, de citation et de superposition narrative, Logan inscrit la présence autochtone au cœur de ces histoires plutôt qu’à leur marge.

Développé pour la première fois en 1990, A Requiem for Our Children demeure l’un des premiers ensembles visuels à aborder les expériences des survivants des pensionnats, bien avant que ces histoires ne soient largement reconnues dans le discours public. Ces œuvres ne fonctionnent pas comme des allégories, mais comme des actes de témoignage — rassemblant témoignages, mémoire et expériences vécues en de puissants mémoriaux visuels.

Tout au long de sa carrière, Logan s’est décrit, avec une ironie caractéristique, comme un « artiste engagé ». Ses œuvres se déploient en récits stratifiés façonnés par les traditions orales, où le sens s’accumule par répétition, variation et subversion. Imagerie biblique, histoire de l’art et vie autochtone contemporaine coexistent dans un même espace pictural, formant un langage visuel à la fois critique, humoristique et profondément humain.
