Backpacker Magazine once rated this section of the park as part of the "best day hike in Illinois."Terry is a former trail guide in the park and will periodically provide interesting narrative information about Starved Rock State Park.We will be hiking at a leisurely pace, about 1.75 mph. If there has been sufficient rainfall, one or both of these canyon headwalls may sport waterfalls. We will have covered 1.5+ miles by the time we return to the trailhead to proceed with the latter portion of our hike. This hike is rated easy to moderate (mostly easy).LAST LEG OF OUR JOURNEYInfo: We'll take a short connecting trail to the Illinois Canyon trailhead parking lot. From there it is a flat in-and-out walk of about 1.5 miles to the canyon headwall and back to the trailhead. (Total hike distance ~ 3 miles) The connecting trail takes us back to our vehicles at the Ottawa Canyon parking lot. A wet spring will mean that there will be 3 streams of water to cross (both ways). The initial stream will be about a half-mile into this trail.
