This introductory workshop provides a hands-on experience in traditional broom construction techniques, guiding participants through the process of selecting materials, preparing fibres, and assembling their own handcrafted whisk broom or small kitchen tools broom. Along the way, participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of broom making, the unique qualities of natural broomcorn, and the enduring value of preserving traditional craft skills.Whether you are a craft enthusiast, history lover, or simply curious about working with your hands, this workshop offers a welcoming environment to slow down, learn a new skill, and create a beautiful, practical item to take home. No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to explore, create, and connect with a centuries-old craft tradition. This is a physical workshop with focus on hands and upper back. Your muscles may be sore the next day.Your instructor, Rachael Martin, is a traditional broom maker and craft educator with a passion for preserving and sharing the art of handcrafted broom making. Attempting her first hand broom in 2019, she fell in love with the process. Drawn to the beauty of natural materials and time-honoured techniques, she creates functional brooms that celebrate both craftsmanship, history and art. Her work combines practical skill with storytelling, exploring the cultural traditions, folklore, and everyday significance of brooms throughout history. Through workshops and demonstrations, she strives to make this unique craft accessible to others, inspiring people to slow down, work with their hands, and discover the satisfaction of creating something both beautiful and useful.NOTES:a) Workshops are transferable to another person and only refundable if we have people on the waiting list who can take your spot.
