- **Event Description**: Learn beginner-friendly quillwork techniques with Anishinaabe artist Christine Toulouse. Inspired by quillwork featured in the special exhibition “Beyond the Brim: Tales Told Through the Hats We Wore”, Christine will introduce the cultural significance and foundations of this traditional art form, including how porcupine quills are prepared, dyed, and applied, before guiding participants through the creation of their very own birchbark keychain featuring a simple quillwork design. 

Set in the beautiful gardens at Billings Estate National Historic Site, this workshop will be hosted outdoors (weather permitting). A guided tour of “Beyond the Brim” is included in the experience and light refreshments will be served.

Meet the artist:
Christine Toulouse (https://www.christinetoulouse.com/) is an Anishinaabe artist from Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation. In addition to growing the understanding of quillwork practices through community workshops and public showcases, her work has been featured in notable exhibitions including the Indigenous Art Exhibition in Mississauga, the 47th Annual Indigenous Art Exhibition in Brantford and Reconciliation in France.

- “Beyond the Brim” is located on the second floor and is only accessible by stairs. A visual aid is available for those unable to visit the special exhibition. The primary exhibition can be explored on the first floor.

Découvrez des techniques de broderie en piquants de porc-épic adaptées aux débutants en compagnie de l’artiste anishinabe Christine Toulouse. Inspirée par les œuvres en piquants de porc-épic présentées dans l’exposition spéciale intitulée Plus qu’un chapeau : Les histoires des chapeaux que nous portons, Christine expliquera la signification culturelle et les fondements de cette forme d’art traditionnelle, notamment la manière dont les piquants de porc-épic sont préparés, teints et appliqués, avant de guider les participants dans la création de leur propre porte-clés en écorce de bouleau orné d’un motif simple en piquants de porc-épic. *Cet atelier est animé en anglais. 

Animé dans les magnifiques jardins du Lieu historique national du domaine Billings, cet atelier se déroulera en plein air (si la météo le permet). Une visite guidée de l’exposition Plus qu’un chapeau est comprise avec cet atelier et des rafraîchissements seront servis.

À propos de l’artiste :
Christine Toulouse est une artiste anishinabe de la Première Nation Sagamok Anishnawbek. En plus de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des techniques de décoration de piquants de porc-épic, grâce à des ateliers communautaires et à des expositions publiques, elle a présenté ses œuvres dans des expositions célèbres, notamment l’Exposition d’art autochtone de Mississauga, la 47e Exposition annuelle d’art autochtone de Brantford et l’événement Réconciliation en France.

- Le produit fini peut être différent de celui qui est présenté dans le matériel promotionnel.
- L’exposition Plus qu’un chapeau est présentée au deuxième étage du musée et n’est accessible que par un escalier. Un support visuel sera proposé aux personnes qui ne peuvent pas s’y rendre. L’exposition principale peut être visitée au rez-de-chaussée.
