- **Event Description**: Contribute to a collaborative body of research on BIPOC Canadian artists and tour the Canada Council Art Bank!About this EventJoin us for an afternoon of researching, writing and discussion about Canadian BIPOC Artists!Co-hosted by the Canada Council Art Bank and the Canadian BIPOC Artists Rolodex, edit-a-thon participants will contribute directly to the creation of an artist’s entry in the Rolodex.After a tour of the Canada Council Art Bank, participants can expect to be guided through the process of creating an artist’s entry for the Rolodex. Edit-a-thons are research sessions where a group of participants collectively conduct research and draft a batch of artist entries within the Rolodex.Edit-a-thon sessions allow for collaboration and co-authorship in the making of the Rolodex and are important forums for discussion, reflection and knowledge dissemination. They are designed to foster community and conversation and allow the project to diversify its audience and perspectives. Support will be provided throughout the session and feedback from these sessions inform our project’s evolving methodology.Your research and writing will help expand the Rolodex and support a representation of Canadian art history that rightfully positions the significance of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour artists.All are welcome, whether you are an artist, researcher, student, curator or simply curious. Please note that participants must bring a laptop or tablet to write the artist entry.*****The Art Bank is a program of the Canada Council for the Arts, the national funding organization for the arts. The Art Bank is the largest collection of contemporary Canadian art with more than 17,000 works of art by 3,000 artists from across the country, including a significant number by Indigenous artists. Through its art rental, exhibitions and outreach activities, the Canada Council Art Bank creates engaging workplaces, public spaces and communities that contribute to the visibility and vibrancy of contemporary art.*****The Canadian BIPOC Artists Rolodex is a digital platform and living network that showcases the work of Black, Indigenous, People of Colour artists. Led by professors Jinny Yu (University of Ottawa), Celina Jeffery (University of Ottawa), Ming Tiampo (Carleton University) and data curator, Felicity Taylor (University of Ottawa), the project aims to facilitate and encourage research, teaching, and exhibitions on BIPOC artists who continue to be underrepresented in publications, exhibitions, and curricula.In its current pilot phase, the Rolodex spans approximately from 1950 to the present using the digital platform, Airtable. Sample entries can be seen here. We are in the process of creating a central, open-source digital format for the creation and use of catalogue entries of Canadian BIPOC artists.
