Drawing on research in thermal networks, building decarbonization, and energy harvesting, this talk will argue that nuclear reactors, AI data centres, and even pizza ovens point to the same opportunity: with the right systems to capture, move, store, and use thermal energy, one source's by-product can help heat Canadian homes and businesses. Nuclear energy can anchor low-carbon district heating at scale; data centres can turn rising digital loads into local thermal assets; and restaurants and our arenas can support the energy needs of surrounding homes. HARvEST Systems offers a practical example of the same principle in commercial kitchens. Together, these examples suggest that the next stage of Canada's clean-energy transition is not only about clean electricity, but about building the thermal infrastructure that can strengthen local businesses, support community resilience, and create new opportunities for economic development.Dr. Jim Cotton is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at McMaster University, Co-Director of the McMaster Institute for Energy Studies and co-founder and CEO of HARvEST Systems. His work connects thermo-fluids expertise with decarbonization, including commercial-kitchen heat-recovery systems that capture waste heat from ovens and fryers and turn it into carbon-free hot water and heating. Cotton also leads research in integrated energy systems and nuclear applications, with projects spanning CANDU and small modular reactor technologies. His recent nuclear work focuses on assessing the efficiency and safety risks of SMR heating applications, including how nuclear heat and thermal storage can be deployed safely and effectively. Across HARvEST and academia, he focuses on turning wasted heat into scalable low-carbon energy solutions.This discussion will be in English.
