Singer and bandleader Aviva Chernick reimagines traditional Judaeo-Spanish folk music with intimacy and emotional range. Aviva and her band bring this musical legacy into the present. 

Aviva’s soaring vocals in the Judaeo-Spanish language, Ladino, as well as Hebrew, Yiddish and English, combine with the musical talents and vocals of her amazing band: the textural, reverberant guitar, oud and keys of Demetri Petselakis (Greece), the deep grooves of Waleed. Abdulhamid (Sudan) on bass, the virtuosic Persian hand percussion of Naghmeh Farahmand (Iran), and the sublime vocal stylings of Maryem Tollar (Egypt). 

Aviva was the first Canadian to be awarded a Virginia Folk Life apprenticeship to study with Sephardic musician Flory Jagoda whose music she celebrates in her most recent album, La Serena. As a leader of her own ensembles, Aviva has toured internationally, and as a guest of the Canadian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates at Expo 2020 in Dubai. 

Admission is free, however space on the Wood Terrace is limited to 400 guests and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating is limited and cannot be reserved, so we recommend arriving early and bringing a chair to enjoy an evening of music and entertainment. For guests arriving after capacity is reached, an overflow seating area outside the Wood Terrace with an obstructed view will be available.

Chanteuse et leader de groupe, Aviva Chernick revisite la musique traditionnelle folk judéo-espagnole. Entourée de ses complices, elle capture avec intimité et émotion l’héritage de cette musique pour la remettre au goût du jour. 

Elle chante en hébreu, ladino, yiddish et anglais. Sur scène, sa voix enivrante est sublimée par les envolées de guitare, oud et clavier de Demetri Petselakis (Grèce), la basse ronflante de Waleed Abdulhamid (Soudan), les percussions virtuoses d’origine persane de Naghmeh Farahmand (Iran) et les majestueuses harmonies vocales de Maryem Tollar (Égypte). 

Aviva Chernick est la première Canadienne à avoir reçu une bourse Virginia Folklife qui lui a permis de poursuivre ses études auprès d’un « trésor national » américain, la musicienne séfarade Flory Jagoda, dont elle célèbre la musique dans son plus récent album, La Serena. Elle a fait des tournées internationales à la tête de divers ensembles, dont une prestation récente à l’Expo de Dubaï (Émirats arabes unis) en tant qu’invitée de l’ambassadrice du Canada. 

L’entrée est gratuite selon le principe du premier arrivé, premier servi. La terrasse en bois a une capacité maximale de 400 personnes et le nombre de places assises est limité. Comme il n’est pas possible de réserver, nous vous recommandons d’arriver tôt et d’apporter votre chaise pliante pour profiter au mieux de la soirée. Une fois la capacité maximale de la terrasse atteinte, une autre section à l’extérieur de la terrasse, avec vue obstruée, sera ouverte au public.
