On Thursday 26th December 1867 - 158 years ago - residents of Guiseley came out in their hundreds to witness the formal opening of Guiseley Town Hall, known to many now as Guiseley Theatre.
The Town Hall was financed by Sir Matthew William Thompson, a wealthy Guiseley resident who at the time was a Director of the Midland Railway Company. Sir Matthew achieved many great things, most notably becoming the Mayor of Bradford and being the leading advocate in the construction of the Forth Bridge. As a final and most generous gesture, St Matthew gave the deeds for the building to the town council stating that it was “for the use of the inhabitants of Guiseley forever”.
Since then, the Theatre has seen many different faces; from Town Hall, to Cinema, and Hospital to Fire Station, before being taken over by Guiseley Amateur Operatic Society in 1985, and renamed 'Guiseley Theatre'.
Guiseley Theatre is located in the home town of one of our Owners who grew up in Guiseley and has heard many stories of people encountering paranormal activity within the building. Ghostly footsteps approaching down staircases have been heard, door handles are said to be rattled and a gentle presence has been encountered by family members.
The team are looking forward to investigating here and will hopefully uncover some of the many stories that this building must have to tell.
