Participants will be treated to a walk through one of the few remaining natural habitats of the Florida Scrub-Jay which is the only bird species that lives exclusively in Florida. Extensive development and habitat fragmentation in Florida threaten this bird’s already small population, placing it on the federal endangered species list. They are friendly and photogenic birds so be sure to bring your cameras and binoculars!The walk will be guided by Former Sarasota County Commissioner Jon Thaxton who researched Florida Scrub-Jays with renowned ornithologists Drs John Fitzpatrick and Glenn Woolfenden. In 1992, Jon lobbied the state to purchase 920 acres to add to the existing 462-acre Oscar Scherer State Park, and 287 acres now known as the Scherer Thaxton Preserve.
