«What is the first occurrence, in print, that you could find of a *high elf* or *high elves*? What about *elvendom*, an *Elvenking*, or a language called *elvish*? And how did we get from the *eluene lond* of Middle English to *Elvenland*?

This is a talk about J.R.R. Tolkien's influence on the Oxford English Dictionary: not through entries he himself worked on, but through his influence on the English language and on later authors and readers of fantasy. The original entries in the OED for words like *elf*, *elfin*, and *elven* long predated the publication of any of Tolkien's works. Now, for the first time in a century, these entries have been fully and completely revised, and a whole set of new, related, entries and senses and compounds have been added. We'll look at what has been added, and what has changed, and how Tolkien's lasting impact on our modern use of these words is now reflected and documented in the dictionary.»
