Nothing begins as raw material.

Materials carry histories, traces of use, and memories of the places they come from. Some seem almost to possess a will of their own. They resist, insist and suggest. Before we shape them, they have already been shaped by forces like weather, time, labour and so-called chance.

This workshop is an invitation to enter into a conversation with matter. Over two days we will walk, gather, observe and make. We will collect materials from our surroundings and spend time getting to know them through handling, shaping, taking apart, reassembling and discussing. Simple hand tools, shared curiosity and careful attention are more important than technical skill. We are neither machines nor artisans.

Rather than treating materials as passive resources, we will ask what they already contain, and how we can build from there. What stories do they hold? What possibilities do they reveal? How might we work with these qualities instead of against
them? Making becomes a way of continuing the stories already held within a material, rather than replacing them.

The workshop values process over outcome and questions over answers. Through collective making and conversation we will explore how our encounters with materials can deepen our understanding of place, memory and the relationships between people and the things we make.

There may even be rope.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gabriel Johann Kvendseth’s (b. 1984, Karlsøy/Gálsá, Norway) artistic practice happens at an intersection between art and craft focusing on sculpture in an expanded sense, while also encompassing writing, performance and interactive installation.

For many years he has worked with found objects which he manipulates intuitively into artworks that resemble weapons, tools or ceremonial artifacts without any clear timeline to them, belonging equally to the past, the present and potential futures.

He has exhibited at institutions such as Kristiansund Kunsthall, Tromsø Kunstforening, RAM Galleri, Northern Norwegian Art Museum, Arkhangelsk Fine Arts Museum, Murmansk Regional Art Museum, Sámi Center for Contemporary Art, Nordic House in Reykjavik, Kristiansand Kunsthall, Kunstnerforbundet and Kunstindustrimuseet in Oslo, Kunsthall Oslo, KODE 2, KRAFT and Hordaland Art Centre in addition to numerous galleries, artist run spaces and other venues in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Germany, Argentina and Mexico.

His work is represented in the public collections of The Art Museum of Northern Norway; KODE1; Western Norway University of Applied Scienced; Hordaland County; Narvik Municipality and The Faculty of Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen as well as a number of private collections.

He lives and works in Bergen and is a graduate of the Bergen National Academy of Art and Design (now KMD / UiB).

ABOUT LOSÆTER

Losæter is a walless cultural institution in one of Bjørvika's seven public squares—a modern park with edible plants and vibrant life. It was established in 2011 as an art project by Futurefarmers commissioned by Bjørvika Utvikling. Today, the farm consists of fields with living topsoil, raised beds, vegetable patches, composting, a public bakehouse, and various activities organized by a large community of volunteers and The Agency for Urban Environment in Oslo kommune (Bymiljøetaten).

In 2024 was the first year of a public art programme curated by Atma Anderson and Mads Pålsrud. It consists of various events and workshops in the form of Full Moon Gatherings, and KunstLAB, each format inviting artists with an eco-social and/or place sensitive art practice to create tangible moments of wonder and connection in the middle of this hectic city.
