Balance By Shannon Fleming
Dame Janet Suzman Prize Winner 2025
Family life whilst working full-time can be a struggle, a balance. The hours eat away at you and follow you home. The kids see you as a worker before a parent. You see your colleagues more than your partner. Excitement and joy disappear before you can smile. But you’re not the only one.
Balance is the story of Allison, who’s competing against time and losing. Her colleagues dismiss her work, expecting the impossible through current world climate issues. Her family can’t see her struggles, begging for her time. She’s struggling to balance her priorities, and feels herself being washed away. Her time is slipping away. But her time isn’t hers. So, whose is it? And can she take it back and regain control?
Balance just might help you see a new perspective.
Shannon Fleming graduated Edge Hill University in 2024 and will complete an MA in Screenwriting in 2026. Having debuted her play about AI, Flesh and Wire, at the Arts Centre last year, she is exploring writing within theatre and TV with relevant topics facing us today.
In March 2025, Shannon was announced as the winner of the Dame Janet Suzman Prize for Playwriting. Balance was chosen to receive the prize by the actor herself.
This performance is a staging of the winning play as part of the prize, produced by Joseph Barber-Roberts and directed by Daniel Vernon from Tenderfoot Theatre.
