Gamelan Kusuma Laras presents public performances of music and other Javanese performing arts, including dance and shadow theater, from the repertoire of the classical court tradition of Surakarta, Central Java. The Artistic Director is I.M. Harjito, professor of music at Wesleyan University, with assistance from co-directors Anne Stebinger (a co-founder) and Jon Rea. The ensemble was formed in 1983 at the New York Indonesian Consulate, and has performed widely in the NYC area, as well as regionally, nationally and internationally, for the past 40 years.
