About Dance Sassy

INSTRUCTOR DESCRIPTIONChris Suharlim, the instructor of Dance Sassy, is a faculty member with over 10 years of teaching experience, focusing on developing an inclusive, fun, and welcoming community environment. For his choreography class, Suharlim draws inspiration from upbeat music (pop, k-pop, dance, and hip hop), including Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, 2ne1, BlackPink, and Girls Generation. The movements in his choreography can be traced to modern influences of hip hop, jazz-funk, heels, waacking, and voguing. His early introduction to dance through cardio fitness classes shape the upbeat and energetic nature of his dance.Outside of the dance studio, Suharlim is a physician and public health expert working at an international NGO focused on saving lives and improving the health of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. Dancing has been an outlet for him to find solace, happiness, and community during times of distress, and he makes it his life's mission to share that joy to his community through dance. He taught classes and workshops for Harvard, MIT, Tufts, Dancing Queerly, QWAM, Studio@550, and Muevelo. He also choreographed and performed at reputable venues, including the John Hancock theater, Yawkey pavilion, Sheraton Back Bay, Bay State Cruise, Oberon, Machine, and Royale. He is a Boston-certified artist with extensive recognition: the Improper Bostonian featured his dance class for the 2017 "Boston's Best Hiphop Class" award, Emerson College produced a documentary (Overtures, 2018), Boston University wrote a profile news article (Sassy for a cause, 2018), and Northeastern University produced a news clip (2019). Learn more about his style on Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, and DanceSassy.com.CLASS DESCRIPTIONDance Sassy classes use upbeat pop and k-pop songs to channel your inner Sasha FIERCE. All levels are more than welcome! We don’t take life too seriously and dance just to shake the stress away. This piece is a representation of what is learned in class. VIDEOShake the stress away! After days of deadlines, projects, exams, homework, and meetings, come Dance Sassy with us. Dance Sassy is a unique mix of fem-style fusion, drawing inspiration from hip hop, jazz-funk, heels, waacking, and voguing. We use body and hip moves to create sexy and seductive choreography. We will be dancing with attitude to upbeat pop and k-pop songs (snap! snap!). Classes will begin with a short warm-up, continued by a detailed breakdown of choreography and quick cool down. Feel free to stay afterward to take a video of yourself for all the social media world. The classes do NOT build on each other, meaning that every class teaches the sequence from beginning to end every time. We typically do new choreography every two weeks. Occasionally, before warm-up, we’ll play the previous week’s songs for fun, so feel free to join in (whether you know the choreo or not)! Again, we are dancing to shake the stress away! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram @DanceSassyWithChris for song choice of the week and class announcements. Register to class at DanceSassy.comWhat kind of shoes should I wear? Feel free to wear clean sneakers (think gym shoes). If you prefer strappy heels, we won’t judge! Is there floor work/Should I bring knee pads? We don’t typically do floor work, but sometimes we do! We always provide modified versions of the choreography's difficult parts (if any), so you always have options for your comfort level! If we do floor work, a pair of knee pads sometimes come in handy for those new to floor work or have sensitive knees.
