CONTEST PHILOSOPHY

To provide a sound educational experience for all participants, enable Oregon bands to qualify for the Oregon School Activities Association State Band Championships tape pool, provide recognition for outstanding performances, and supply valid, thorough critique and clinics to all students and directors.

SCHEDULE

Performance Schedule

Bands will be scheduled into one of two blocks, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Bands are expected to be present for their entire scheduled block. Smaller schools will be scheduled in the early block.

Clinic or concert for morning block concludes by 1:00 PM. Awards and Clackamas Community College Wind Ensemble concert concludes by 6:00 PM.

Tentative schedule will be emailed and posted here in mid-February. Posted schedule subject to minor changes.

ELIGIBILITY

High school bands from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, or Northern California. Schedule will be filled based on past participation, geographic diversity, and quality. “Second” bands will be accepted ONLY if space is available and priority given to schools whose top bands attend.

FORMAT

- Oregon Large Group Festival/Contest Guidelines will be followed.

- Oregon Band Director's Association Adjudication System will be used.

- Oregon Band Director’s Association Required Literature List will be used.

These are available on the OBDA website.

STATE CONTEST QUALIFICATION

For Oregon bands only: Bands receiving two "I" or "I-" ratings will be eligible to apply and submit their performance tape for one of the "open" tape pool spots in the 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A or 6A divisions. Out of state schools meeting this standard will also be publicly recognized.

DIVISIONS AND AWARDS

Two divisions (large and small) will be created, based on dividing bands into two groups based on school size. Medium-sized schools may request the larger division. 1st and 2nd place trophies will be awarded for both divisions. Ratings will not be posted but point totals will be emailed (school names removed) after the contest. Each group will receive one recording of their performance, three tapes with verbal critiques and a conductor videotape. These will be mailed to participants.

ADJUDICATION

Three performance adjudicators and one sight-reading adjudicator will critique each group. All bands will be judged at the OBDA 5A, 6A (4A) standard for competitive purposes but scores will be converted to each school's appropriate classification for qualification for the OSAA State Band Contest. Bands will be required to sight-read. Scores will be added to the performance scores to determine trophies (60 of 360 points) but will not affect ratings. An additional adjudicator will critique conductors on videotape. This will have no impact on ratings. The conductor critique/video will be included in each school’s packet along with judge’s sheets and cassettes.

REQUIRED LITERATURE AND TIME LIMIT

One selection from the appropriate classification shown on the OBDA list. Titles may be substituted with approval of the OSAA state contest director. Remaining selections can be from any source. The updated Literature List can be found on the OBDA website. Titles from previous lists are also eligible. Time limit: 30 minutes to set-up, perform and exit. Bands must play a minimum of 15 or 18 minutes of music, depending on your division, especially Oregon bands wishing to qualify for State.

AWARDS PRESENTATION

Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the festival following a performance by the Clackamas Wind Ensemble.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

Clackamas Community College will not be held responsible for valuables or any other personal property that is lost or stolen during the festival. Storage rooms are shared between schools and are not locked. Encourage students to leave their valuables at home or on the bus.

REGISTRATION

Now accepting credit cards! We're saving the trees and going paperless with online registration and payments. No worries, we will still accept checks and purchase orders with an online registration. A note if paying by check or PO: your registration is INCOMPLETE and your band WILL NOT be scheduled until we receive payment. If your payment is not received within two weeks of registration, your registration will be voided and you must begin the process again. Many groups have been turned away in past years, so it is critical that payment accompany each school’s application to be considered for a time slot.
