On July 19th, we’re turning the trails into a moving laboratory and a dessert bar at the same time. We’ll supply everything you need to make ice cream on the go... You choose your flavors, load them into leakproof ziplocks, stash them in your pack, and then run or hike while motion, time, and a little trail magic do the rest. It’s science. It’s slightly absurd. It’s genuinely delicious! This ridiculous event is free for 2026 Members and $10 for everyone else who wants in on the churn. It also doubles as our July Team HippoGriffin and Newbie Run, so expect a welcoming, no pressure vibe with plenty of pauses for curiosity, laughter, and taste testing. Come for the miles, stay for the ice cream, leave wondering why all runs don’t end this way. Please be sure to let us know if you have any dietary restrictions, such as dairy-free so we can bring a non-dairy alternative. Need a visual of how this will work? Check out this video:

We host Team HippoGriffin Meet-Ups in conjunction with the Newbies Meet-Ups so that everyone (regardless of experience) can feel comfortable joining, learning, and enjoying the outdoors together. These sessions will help build confidence, connection, and community by gaining familiarity with the trails.
All meet-ups are at the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ, on the Squatchy Leftovers 5K course, and will last approximately 2 hours; the address is 374 Walker Road, West Orange, NJ. There are portable toilets at the trailhead, including an ADA unit. And minors must have a parent/guardian present at the event (this is not a drop-off event), and parents/guardians are responsible for the administration of any medications.
Who Can Join the Newbies?
