- **Event Description**: As part of the Commonwealth’s Virginia 250 commemoration, the James Madison Museum of Orange County Heritage and The Cultural Roots Society invite the public to an evening of exhibition viewing and presentation focused on the lives, landscapes, and legacies of African-descended Virginians.

The evening will feature Un/Bound: Free Black Virginians, 1619–1865, a traveling exhibition from the Virginia Museum of History &amp; Culture. The exhibit explores the lives of free Black Virginians from the arrival of Africans in 1619 through emancipation, highlighting community formation, resilience, and the pursuit of freedom.

Following the exhibit, attendees are invited to stay for Landscapes of Legacy: Honoring the People and Places That Shaped Virginia’s Story, a Virginia 250 presentation by George Monroe, Jr., President and CEO of The Cultural Roots Society. Building on the themes introduced in Un/Bound, the presentation explores historic landscapes where generations of African-descended Virginians lived, worked, worshipped, and preserved cultural knowledge. Topics include family and community, agricultural and cultural traditions, sacred and commemorative sites, and the ongoing work of descendants in stewarding memory and heritage.
