- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 20 Jun, 2026 at 10:00 am – Sat, 20 Jun, 2026 at 02:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Gain the knowledge and confidence to care for pet birds properly through this comprehensive training course developed by Darling Range Wildlife Shelter. Covering essential husbandry, balanced nutrition, common health conditions, enrichment, behaviour, and appropriate cage design, this course places a strong focus on parrots, lorikeets, and parakeets commonly kept in Australian homes.
Participants will learn how to recognise the early warning signs of illness, pain, and behavioural stress, critical skills for birds that often hide symptoms until they are seriously unwell. The course also explores trusted avian veterinary options across Western Australia, helping owners establish a reliable support network before emergencies arise.
We address the absolute “no-go” zones in bird care, including toxic foods such as avocado, dangerous household items like Teflon cookware, unsafe toys, and airborne hazards including incense, aerosols, smoke, and fumes. Beyond the basics, this course explores what it truly means to welcome a bird into your family: daily cleaning, enrichment, socialisation, long-term commitment, financial considerations, and avoiding caregiver burnout while maintaining high welfare standards.
You’ll gain practical guidance on selecting safe and enriching toys, understanding natural behaviours, creating stimulating environments, and sourcing supplies responsibly. The course also discusses ethical pathways for obtaining pet birds, including rescue, adoption, and responsible rehoming.
Importantly, this course does not promote or support the commercial pet trade. Darling Range Wildlife Shelter is not giving away animals through this program, nor are we encouraging impulse ownership. However, pet birds already exist widely within our community, including many native species that have inadvertently become companion animals, and ignoring this reality does not improve their welfare. Instead, this training aims to empower the community with the knowledge and confidence needed to provide safer, more ethical, and welfare-focused care for the feathered companions already in people’s homes.
The course also covers:
• Which bird species can legally be kept as pets in Western Australia
• Appropriate licensing requirements and legal responsibilities
• Ethical ownership and responsible long-term care
• Community engagement and wildlife-friendly education
• Pathways into wildlife rescue and rehabilitation training
Participants interested in native wildlife care will also be introduced to the WERG (Wildlife Emergency Response Group) course and associated licensing pathways for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in Western Australia.
By the end of this training, participants will be equipped to create a safe, enriching, and sustainable environment that supports their bird’s physical health, mental wellbeing, and natural behaviours for life.
All profits from this course go directly into wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and release at Darling Range Wildlife Shelter.
