Biological minerals (known as biominerals) have wide-ranging purposes and are found in all six biological kingdoms. Biominerals are an important link between the living and non-living world that play major roles in elemental cycles and have key uses in society from energy and technology to environmental cleanup. Join Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Assistant Curator of Earth Sciences Dr. Carla Rosenfeld to explore biominerals of the microbial world, searching high and low from mountaintops to underground mines to find unique and useful mineral-making bacteria and fungi.

About Dr. Carla Rosenfeld:
Dr. Carla Rosenfeld is the Assistant Curator of Earth Sciences at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Carla received her PhD in Soil Science and Biogeochemistry from Penn State and a BS in Chemistry from McGill University. She also spent time as a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and University of Minnesota. Carla is an environmental biogeochemist, and she uses tools from mineralogy, geochemistry, and microbiology to study how pollutants and nutrients behave in the environment. Her research focuses on mining and other human-impacted environments and aims to understand microbe-mineral interactions that influence bioavailability and mobility of metal contaminants.
