Throwing away lemon peels and unable to keep that basil plant alive? Not after this class!

This Earth Day, savor a cocktail class with a conservation twist! Learn to make Lincoln Park Zoo’s specialty Acts of Green cocktail using food scraps from around your kitchen, as well as creative ways to give your “trash” another delicious life!

This virtual event will include 30–45 minutes of guided instruction followed by 5–10 minutes of Q&As with the presenters.

Please note: Lincoln Park Zoo will send recipes, tips, and tricks to registered guests via email before the event, but guests must use their own “scrap” ingredients.


Presenters:
Mackenzie Heinze – Sustainable Bartender
*Mackenzie is a sustainability-minded bartender focused on cocktail creation that utilizes second- and third-use ingredients and practices ethical consumption. Mackenzie has worked as a cocktail apprentice at Tales of the Cocktail, competed twice in the Speed Rack charity cocktail competition, and attended several cocktail weeks with a focus on anti-waste in the cocktail sphere.


Katrina Chipman, Director of Horticulture
*Katrina oversees the gardens at Lincoln Park Zoo. Under her direction, the Horticulture team strives to create beautiful landscapes inside and outside animal habitats for both the animals and public. The zoo is home to more than 1,000 plant species, including 330 species of woody plants, and became an accredited arboretum in 2019. The zoo also has special collections of hardy hibiscus, North American native hydrangea, and ninebark.


Julie Somor, Senior Conservation and Science Coordinator
*Julie’s lifelong love of animals evolved into a deeper concern for the conservation of wildlife and wild places as she attended environmental studies courses at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. Eventually, Julie’s pursuit of an education in sustainability led to an internship with the Green Earth Institute in the Chicago suburbs. In June 2013, Julie became Lincoln Park Zoo’s Conservation & Science coordinator, a role in which she assisted with projects and research to support the zoo’s conservation mission. In 2015, Julie helped reinstate the zoo’s Green Team, which she now chairs, working to further the zoo’s commitment to conservation by advancing operational sustainability.
