Luxury tourism has traditionally been defined in terms of thread counts, gold-gilt taps, and white-gloved concierges; an industry characterised by opulence, ostentation and a stiff upper lip. However, in recent years, the luxury industry has begun to see a departure from traditional definitions of luxury and many companies are increasingly flouting the proverbial Anti-Laws of luxury branding.
Today, the concept of luxury has evolved beyond people, places and things. The modern luxury traveller is increasingly characterised as seeking pleasure, self-actualisation and meaning. The COVID-19 pandemic has further underscored the ability of even the humblest of indulgences to fulfil the luxury needs of individuals. This prompts the crucial yet underexplored question of, “What are tomorrow’s travel luxuries?”
This fascinating panel session will challenge existing definitions of luxury by examining who the modern luxury tourists are and what motivates them. It will explore the adaptive measures that the industry is taking to cater to these shifts in luxury demand, culminating in an attempt to arrive at a new definition of luxury travel.
The panel will comprise representatives from prominent tourism business, exploring the topic from the perspectives of online travel agents, accommodation providers, and foodservice providers.
