What do two former U.S. presidents, a pair of seductive crooners, and one unruly rock band all have in common? Answer: they're all a part of the illustrious history of one of New York's most iconic hotels. From the who's who of the 20th century to some of the most famous events ever hosted in New York City, this is the story of the second Waldorf-Astoria hotel, a nexus of culture, classiness, and celebrities.
Join New York Adventure Club for the second of a two-part series on the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel legacy. In this part, we explore the captivating story of the Waldorf Astoria New York — built only two years after the original was demolished to make way for the Empire State Building, this soaring two-tower hotel on Park Avenue would come to redefine a new era of luxury dining and travel for a century to come.
Led by Nicki Woodard, historical documentarian producer and creator of the As The Money Burns podcast, our virtual look at the past, present, and future of the Waldorf Astoria New York will include:
-The construction of the new hotel in 1931 and novel features and amenities for its time , including a kid’s menu, female chefs, and room service
- Hotel magnate Conrad Hilton and his effect on the Waldorf-Astoria after purchasing it in 1949
- Famous guests who lived in the Waldorf-Astoria , including Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor
- Sights and stories of its most historic locations , from the Presidential Suite to secret train track underneath known as Track 61
-The hotel's most famous events , including the annual April In Paris Ball, International Debutante Ball, and Explorers Club Dinner
-Details surrounding the landmark restoration currently underway, with exclusive footage and interviews of the renovation project from architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)
- A sneak peek at the future residences , The Towers of the Waldorf Astoria, with Douglas Elliman Development Marketing
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Nicki — any and all questions about the Waldorf Astoria New York are welcomed and encouraged!
