Opened in 1942 by John Garfield and Bette Davis, the Canteen was a NIGHTCLUB EXCLUSIVELY FOR SERVICEMEN, staffed entirely by Hollywood stars volunteering their time to serve food, sign autographs, dance, and entertain troops free of charge. FROM JOAN CRAWFORD AND RITA HAYWORTH TO CARY GRANT AND SPENCER TRACY, A-list celebrities GAVE SERVICEMEN A MAGICAL ESCAPE FROM THE HARDSHIPS OF WAR. With live music, jitterbugging, floor shows, and even murals painted by top artists, the Hollywood Canteen was a dazzling combination of glamour, generosity, and patriotism.
