The Shadow Side of Coaching workshop with Robin Shohet, Joan Wilmot, and Andrea Cardillo

About this Event

Every profession has a shadow side - doctors can K*ll, teachers stifle learning and so on. The excellent book Power in the Helping Professions by Guggenhbuhl-Craig describes this well.

In a profession that is keen to establish itself, there may be an unwillingness to look at the shadow side. In fact it is only recently that supervision has become an important part of the coaching world.

During this 1.5h open conversation, Robin Shohet, Joan Wilmot and Andrea Cardillo explore the shadow side of coaching with the aim to support coaches and their clients to inquiry into:

  • How can coaching deliver on its promise of transformational change when triangular contracting involves individual development being evaluated by senior managers against transactional and conventional goals?
  • How much is coaching incurring the risk of being just part of a wider ‘happiness industry’ (William Davies), loading the mandate of happiness on individuals rather than stimulating dysfunctional systems to change? And how can coaches manage the tensions between individual and systemic change in a market society?

The event is imagined for an audience of business and leadership coaches, team coaches, OD professional, counsellors and therapists operating within small and big organizational systems.

This workshop will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our camera and microphones to interact with each other as a group.

To support practitioners in this time of extraordinary circumstances we are offering access to this group for a self-select fee.

The self-select fee is a radical inclusion policy to open learning for all colleagues. The guide price for this event is £20.00, however, we appreciate that income varies greatly in different locations and circumstances. Please contribute what you can to help us maintain inclusive professional training.

All the colleagues at ONLINEVENTS and the presenters we collaborate with are committed to working in a manner consistent with the BACP Ethical Framework, which can be accessed on the link below. When registering for this event you are agreeing to be present and interact in a manner that is consistent with this Framework.

Robin Shohet

I have been teaching supervision for over 40 years through the CSTD (www.cstdlondon.co.uk) and co-authored and edited several books on this topic. I do not separate supervision from the rest of life and write about this in a recent work which I co-wrote with my wife "In Love with Supervision. Creating Transformative Conversations."
