About this Event

"...When I turned around and faced the room…well I just stood there with my mouth open. The whole floor was full of people – and they were dancing! The band was pounding! The guys up there were wailing! The music was rompin’ and stompin’. Everybody was movin’ and groovin’….We started saying ‘This is dancin’ heaven’. It even looked like the floor was getting in the mood because it was bouncing up and down too." -Frankie Manning

Anyone who wanted to dance the night away during the Roaring Twenties in New York knew exactly where to go — The Savoy Ballroom, aka "Home of the Happy Feet." Taking up an entire city block in Harlem, this massive dance palace was the place to dance your worries away to some of the best jazz bands on Planet Earth, from Chick Webb to Count Basie. But how did this dance mecca come to be, and what transformed it into one of the greatest cultural landmarks in American history? This is the complete story of the legendary Savoy Ballroom.

Join New York Adventure Club for the second of a two-part series on the full history of the legendary Savoy Ballroom (1926-1958) — a once sprawling dance hall in Harlem, New York that held the highest place in the hearts and soles of swing dancers for its incredible band battles and dance marathons.

Led by DJ and jazz historian Matthew “Fat Cat” Rivera, Part 2 of this virtual presentation and listening party featuring rare 78 RPM jazz records will include:

  • An overview of the Savoy Ballroom between 1939-1958, from its heyday to tragic demise
  • An introduction to the continued dance and music innovations at the Savoy in the War Years and beyond
  • A look at, and listen to, rare first-hand resources, including film footage, photographs, 78rpm records, and surviving broadcasts
  • Oral histories from the musicians, dancers, and patrons of the Savoy during this exciting period in time
  • A survey of the various remodelings of the Savoy Ballroom

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with DJ Fat Cat — any and all questions about the Savoy Ballroom are welcomed and encouraged!
