Within 20 years of New York City's first subway system opening in the early 1900s, the Upper West Side transformed from a rural enclave of farms and free-standing homes to a densely-packed residential neighborhood with buildings on every block. And with these moneyed residents came the creation of an entertainment district where live shows and motion picture venues were plentiful. But how did this bustling neighborhood between 59th and 110th streets go from having 31,000 theater seats in the early 20th century to barely 1,000 a century later? This is the story of the historic indoor and outdoor theaters that once lined Broadway, and the only one still standing all these years later.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the former 20th century entertainment destinations along Broadway on New York's Upper West Side, from historic vaudeville theaters to motion picture venues.

Led by NYC Tour Guide and Upper West Side resident Gary Dennis, our virtual journey back in time between 59th and 110th streets will include:

-The importance of Broadway , and its evolution from a dirt path to one of the most famous street in the world
-Why the Upper West Side quickly became one of the top entertainment hubs in the city
- Rare photos of indoor and outdoor theaters from around the neighborhood , including who designed them and which were the most prestigious
-The stars of the screen and stage that got their start in the Upper West Side theaters, including The Marx Brothers, Jean Arthur, Milton Berle, James Cagney, and even Big Bird
-A discussion around the lone theater that still stands today

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Gary — any and all questions about the Upper West Side are welcomed and encouraged!
