Join us in reading Isabelle Stengers’ In Catastrophic Times: Resisting the Coming Barbarism and discuss the challenges of addressing global crises at a time when the formulas relied on by those Stengers calls “our guardians” stop working.

The Slow Reading Group is an informal space for collectively reading meaningful texts that open out the ideas and themes from our research-based events at Nottingham Contemporary and the Three Ecologies Research Group at the University of Nottingham. Informed by Félix Guattari’s notion of the Three Ecologies - the idea that our environmental crisis relates to our contemporary capitalism - and by theories of decolonisation and intersectionality, the reading group invites you to plot connections between these fields, combining academic and everyday approaches to research.

No specialist expertise is needed for slow reading, other than an interest in reading with others. A first gathering on Mon 19 Oct is an opportunity to read the introduction and first chapter together. In later sessions, we aim to read ahead to allow time for engaged discussions.

A PDF copy of the chapters is available here.

Online. Free. Limited Capacity. Booking required.

Following sessions: Mon 16 Nov and 21 Dec. All sessions online.

Isabelle Stengers is a philosopher and writer. Until her retirement, she taught philosophy of science at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, in Belgium. She received the grand prix for philosophy from the Académie Française in 1993 and her work engages with the politics of science, decolonising thought and the challenge of inventing commoning practices in catastrophic times. She is the author and co-author of numerous books, including Capitalist Sorcery: Breaking the Spell (2007), Cosmopolitics (2010), Women Who Make a Fuss (2014) and Hypnosis between Magic and Science (2019).
