The walls of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) are lined with portraits of many elegant ladies, though while one might assume they're all princesses or duchesses, many of them are in fact royal mistresses and high-class courtesans throughout the ages. Who are these “shady ladies,” and why were they idolized in many cultures throughout history? It's time to virtually roam the halls of one of the world's great art museum to uncover the secrets behind these "scandalous" women...if you know where to look.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the great works of art found throughout The MET that depict history's highest-profile mistresses and courtesans, ranging from ancient Greece, to Edo-period Japan, to Belle Epoque Paris.

Led by Dr. Andrew Lear, a world-renowned expert on gender history and NYC tour guide, our virtual journey through this now forgotten side of past cultures will include:

-A look at "shady ladies" at The MET depicted through different art mediums , including ancient Greek sculpture, Japanese wall painting, Renaissance masterworks, and British portraits
-A look at one of the museum’s absolute most famous paintings
-The first nude female statue in ancient Greece , and the hetaera who modeled for it
-A discussion of some of the most notable shady ladies at the museum, such as the oiran of 18th century Tokyo's pleasure quarter, a Venetian courtesan who published books of poetry, and the official royal mistresses of the French kings
-The story behind a "royal bastard" who is the ancestor of many English aristocrats

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Andrew — any and all questions about the shady ladies of the MET are welcomed and encouraged!
