RSA Coaching Conversations on 21st Century Challenges | Online Event | RSA Coaching Conversations on 21st Century Challenges
Be part of an online conversation designed to make sense of our rapidly shifting context and create insights into ‘what next?'

About this Event

Right now, the pandemic is emphatically disrupting what we thought we knew, interrupting ‘business as usual’, and leaving us with questions and unknowns that we’re trying to make sense of. And it’s only one example of living through and contributing to large-scale change in a globally connected world.

No matter how much time and energy we put into solving this and other global and local challenges it can feel as if there is always more to do.

In this series of online events, hosted on Zoom by the RSA Fellow-led Coaching Network, we will create a space for conversations to respond to and contribute to navigating challenging circumstances, which may include an exploration of questions such as:

  • How much leverage do we really have as individuals, organisations and leaders to create real change?
  • What gets in the way of translating insights into wise personal and collective action?
  • How do we navigate our emotional experiences including overwhelm, anxiety, hopelessness, or perhaps excitement, urgency, and a rising desire to contribute, in the face of impossibly large challenges or immovable institutions?
  • How do we retain the capacity to think critically for ourselves, and also be responsible social actors and influencers, amid rapid change and shifting social and other responsibilities?

Whatever the context of these exploratory coaching conversations, we aim to share an understanding of coaching and a coaching perspective at the intersection of RSA strategic themes and emerging current events.

The online calls are participatory and, during the call, we will break into pairs or small groups to facilitate deeper exploration and reflection. This is also an opportunity to meet and connect with other Fellows and like-minded individuals.

The themes will remain responsive to current events, and each event in the series will be held on the third Tuesday every month, from 6-7.30pm. We have provisionally arranged them as follows:

Tuesday 17th November: Leadership in times of change

Whatever our work, we are all leaders, whether or not we are in a traditional organisational structure with team members who report to us. In this online event, we will explore what it means to be a leader, especially in times of change (be it personal, organisational, or global change). We will offer a potentially new and different way to take a look at leadership and where you can be most effective at supporting those around you.

Tuesday 8th December: Reviewing for Resilience

A chance to take a breath before 2021 and look back at what has been a turbulent year for many. We will explore what it means to be resilient and what you've seen new during the past year that you want to take with you into 2021. We also want to consult with you whether, and how, to continue these monthly events, to hear your ideas for 2021, and for us to hear a little about what you want to celebrate about the year just ending.

We also invite you to share with anyone in your networks who may be interested. All are welcome to join from anywhere in the world, and attendance is by no means restricted to RSA Fellows or practicing coaches.

RSA Fellow-led Coaching Network: Please note: the events will not be recorded, but a short read-out will be circulated to the Network after each event. Not a Network member? Sign up here to receive these updates or invitations to future events.

Online events to be held on Zoom: These events will all be held virtually, on Zoom so you can join from the comfort of your home. Note the events are listed under GMT UK timezone, but you are welcome to join us from anywhere in the world. Once you have signed up, you will receive an email with call joining instructions and an option to add the event to your calendar.

Not familiar with Zoom? It is an easy to use online conferencing platform. Users do not need to make an account to join the call, and call joining instructions will be sent with your confirmation email once you register.

Previous events in the series:

Tuesday April 21st, 6pm-7.30pm: The Resurgence in Altruism.

Can the current resurgence of altruism fuel permanent personal, professional and social change? Or will we revert to outdated paradigms as this crisis abates moving us away from finding a brave new world? Join us on this call to discuss what does it mean for us at an individual level; how we live, work, love and what we dedicate our lives to.

Tuesday May 19th, 6pm-7.30pm: The Individual in Society.

A consideration of what this thing is that we call society, how we find our place in relationship with others in the community and in organisations, and how we can continue to influence and positively impact others, even, or especially, in times of rapid change and uncertainty.

Tuesday 16th June: Where Does Wise Action Come From and What Gets in the Way?

A continuing exploration of why, even when we are able to understand what actions we would like to take, or see others take, we are not always able to create those actions in ourselves and others.

Tuesday 21st July: Seeing and Responding to Difference

How do we see, and respond to, difference? July's Coaching Conversation will be an exploration, using coaching philosophies, to deepen our understanding of how we perceive a difference in each other and what that means for how we respond.

Tuesday 15th September: What is it to Live a Meaning-Centred Life?

The recent events continue, for many of us, to change the meaning we place on things and impact the choices we make in our lives. Some things that were previously important have fallen by the wayside and others have come closer to the centre of what matters. In this event we will delve into what makes us tick at the ‘meaning’ level and what we are learning about ourselves and our society.

Tuesday 20th October: Breaking the Shackles- collaborating and creating

Improv techniques provide the experience of being in the moment, to listen and engage with others to co-create ideas and possibilities--ideal when we are meeting new challenges. This participatory and fun session will enhance your presence, emotional intuition and co-creation and provide you with ways to support your own and others’ development in areas as diverse as confidence, flexibility, creativity and trust. We’ll guide you through practical games and exercises to experience the improv mind-set and its ‘lighter way of being’ . Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on how improv skills could support your practice, whether as a coach, leader or collaborator.
